the most quotable line from the romney speech is hope is not a strategy talking about the middle east. you used the words leading from behind. mitt romney used it at least once in the speech. the speech was an attempt to say, this is what barack obama has done. here is what i would do. it was tonal more than specific. it was more we need to be bigger, more aggressive whether it's iran or another syria. it was broadly philosophically we need a stronger, more muscular approach. >> on several points he's critical on iran because he would have opposed the initial attempt to open up towards iran and thinks the president didn't go far enough at all in supporting the green revolution of students in iran in june of 2009. the response from the obama team is that the iranian leaders, the reform leaders, student revolutionaries were saying, don't be too overt. it will have a backlash effect. that can be e debated. on sanctions they are criticizing the failure to go tougher though the president arguably did better than george bush in getting russia and china to permit tougher sanctions. they are

campaign would like to put out there of mitt romney as commander in chief. just to talk a little about what you and wolf were talking about a few moments ago, you go into the excerpts and you can take away a few different things. i was listening to a call yesterday and you just mentioned the situation in syria and they were talking about this idea of providing arms to the rebels in syria as an idea that would appeal to the left as to people who look at this from a humanitarian standpoint, and so it was interesting to hear the romney campaign talk about that issue from this standpoint. the other thing they raised on this conference call and that you also see in the excerpts is this idea of a two-state solution between the israelis and the palestinians. we saw on the mother jones hidden camera video romney throw cold water on the idea of a two-state solution. if you look at the excerpts, he talks about a free and democratic and prosperous palestinian state that would stand side by side with an israeli state and that's very different at least in tone, especially during the foreign p

things we're talking about this week is the fact that romney seemingly in what he laid out in the past debate on his tax cuts, what he's saying and the reality of his plan don't add up. the president wasn't able effectively say to him, you know, you haven't been specific on the deductions. he did not directly challenge mitt romney, and one of the things looking forward this week interesting to see is whether joe biden is able to turn to paul ryan in that way and say, your math doesn't add up. give me one specific deduction. in some ways i think with joe biden and paul ryan it's going to be an even more damaging conversation if ryan has to obviscate and come up with specifics because he's the numbers guy. >> he's going to be prepared. we'll be prepared. >> he doesn't have enough time it to answer the question, but going back to the theme of the day, what matters, the economy always matters. ever since the cold war it's been about the economy with the possible exception of '04, right? we're in the war of terrorism. >> even in '04 the exit polls showed that even though it was a foreign po
